DIY Wicker Basket Planters

You’ve seen all those gorgeous, boho wicker basket planters on Pinterest, right?

If you’re anything like me, you’ve even saved a few ideas to your virtual boards, hoping you’ll eventually circle back to them and give ‘em a go.

I’ll let you in on a little secret… I did circle back to my wicker basket planter ideas, and it turns out they’re ridiculously easy to make!

Wicker plant pot

I had originally thought I’d have to buy a wicker basket and carefully line it with a waterproof bag and pray that it would never tear.

I even looked for wicker baskets specifically made to be used as planters, but there were never any that I really loved.

Then I thought to myself – what if I just buy a cheap plastic planter and simply place it inside a beautiful wicker basket of my choosing?

And so goes the tale of how my two wicker basket planters were born.

What you’ll need

  • Wicker basket of your choice
  • Plastic planter with almost the same diameter as the wicker basket (preferably with drainage hole)
  • Saucer
  • Soil
  • Plant

Assembly

It’s sort of silly to explain this part as I’m sure it’s obvious what you need to do. But here it goes anyway, in case it’s your first time planting.

Step 1: Fill the bottom half of the plastic planter with soil.

Step 2: Insert your plant with its existing soil.

Step 3: Fill the gaps around the plant with more soil.

Step 4: Place the saucer at the bottom of the wicker basket and then place the plastic plant pot on top of the saucer.

Step 5: Stare in awe at your brand-new wicker basket planter that only took five minutes to assemble.

Note: If you’ve decided to get a plant pot without a drainage hole, you have to make sure to add a thick layer of pebbles at the bottom for drainage, otherwise you might get root rot.
